Portable or window air conditioner?
Updated
If your window and your lease allow one, a window unit keeps its hot side and compressor outside, so less heat and less noise end up in the room. A portable makes sense when you cannot mount anything in the window, cannot lift a unit into it, or need to move the AC between rooms.
Side by side
| Window unit | Portable | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the heat goes | Straight outside from the back of the unit | Through a hose that loses some heat back into the room |
| Compressor noise | Mostly outside | In the room with you |
| Floor space | None | A 47 to 73 pound unit on the floor, for the picks here |
| Install | Lift it into the window and secure it | Roll it over and fit a panel in the window |
| Rules | Some buildings ban them | Often allowed where window units are not. Check your lease |
Comparing the BTU numbers
The ENERGY STAR sizing chart is written for room air conditioners like window units. Window units are commonly labeled with a DOE rating. Midea's own site lists its window models as "BTU DOE". For a portable, the matching number is the SACC or DOE figure, not the ASHRAE number on the box. So a 10,000 BTU portable box and a 10,000 BTU window unit are not the same size. The Midea Duo is 10,000 SACC. The BLACK+DECKER BPACT10WT is 5,550 DOE.
Window units have water problems too
In June 2025 the CPSC announced Midea's recall of about 1.7 million U and U+ window air conditioners, sold under Midea and other brand names. The CPSC said pooled water could fail to drain quickly enough, which can lead to mold growth. The remedy is a refund or repair. If you own a U-shaped window unit, check the recall page for your model. None of the portables here are part of it.
When a portable is the right call
- Your building or lease does not allow window units.
- Your window is a casement or an odd size. A portable can vent through other paths with the right kit.
- You cannot safely lift a unit into a window.
- You want to move it from the bedroom at night to the office by day.
If you go portable, size it by SACC with the calculator, and read single vs dual hose before you pick.
